Get a Free QuoteHow much does a concrete slab cost in Austin, TX?
Two Austin sources put a poured slab at roughly $5.63 to $11.26 per square foot installed (projectcosted, August 2026) and $6 to $10 per square foot for a reinforced slab (HomeBlue, September 2024). A 20x20 slab lands near $2,252 to $5,900 across the two. Rock, clay work, long access and tear-out push a quote higher.
Do I need a permit to pour a concrete slab in Austin?
Usually not for flatwork. The City of Austin exempts a residential sidewalk, driveway or concrete flatwork that is not in the public right-of-way. The slab still counts toward your lot's impervious cover limit, and anything touching the curb or sidewalk needs a Driveway/Sidewalk permit. A slab foundation for a house or addition is part of a building permit.
How thick should a concrete slab be?
The residential code minimum for a floor slab is 3.5 inches (IRC R506.1, as adopted in Austin). HomeBlue's Austin guide puts residential slabs at 4 to 6 inches, spa makers ask for at least 4 inches under a hot tub, and steel building suppliers call for 4 to 6 inches, or 6 to 8 with heavy equipment.
Is Austin clay bad for concrete slabs?
It is hard on them, not bad for them. Houston Black clay, the Texas state soil and common on the Blackland Prairie side of Austin, shrinks and swells enough to open cracks up to 4 inches wide (USDA). Slabs there need a good base, steel, proper drainage and, for buildings, an engineered design. West of town the soil is thin over limestone instead.
Can you pour concrete in Austin in the summer?
Yes, with planning. Austin averages 28.7 days a year at or above 100 F (NOAA 1991-2020 normals, Camp Mabry), so summer pours start early, may use chilled water or ice in the mix, and get cured right away. NRMCA guidance says chilled water can lower concrete temperature up to 10 F and ice up to 20 F.

How long before I can drive on a new slab?
HomeBlue's Austin guide says a slab is usually walkable in about 48 hours and fully cured in 28 to 30 days. Vehicles wait longer than feet; ask whoever pours yours for the day, since mix, thickness and weather all change it.
Does Austin Concrete Slabs do slab or foundation repair?
No. Austin Concrete Slabs handles new concrete: slab foundations, pads, footings and building slabs. Foundation leveling, pier repair and mudjacking are a different trade with different equipment.
Is there a state license for concrete contractors in Texas?
No. Texas doesn't license concrete or general contractors at the state level. Work in the City of Austin's right-of-way, such as driveway approaches and sidewalks, does require a City ROW contractor's license.
What should a concrete slab quote include?
Thickness, steel type and spacing, base depth, vapor retarder or not, joint spacing, finish, who removes old concrete and spoils, and who pulls any permit. Two quotes on different specs aren't comparable.
Does a concrete slab need to slope?
Outdoor slabs should shed water. Austin's adopted residential code wants impervious surfaces within 10 feet of a house sloped at least 2 percent away from it, and garage floors sloped toward a drain or the vehicle door.
How much concrete do I need for a slab?
Length times width in feet, times thickness in inches divided by 12, divided by 27, gives cubic yards. A 20x20 slab 4 inches thick needs about 4.94 yards before waste. The site's calculator does it for any size.

Can a slab be poured over an old slab?
Sometimes, but it raises the surface, can trap moisture and carries the old slab's cracks up. Tearing out costs $1.10 to $1.70 per square foot on HomeBlue's Austin page, which is often worth it.
Do I need an HOA's approval for a slab?
Check your HOA's design rules. The City's permit exemptions don't replace HOA approval, and many associations want plans before exterior work starts.
How do I check my lot's zoning and impervious cover?
The City of Austin's property profile shows zoning, and the residential permit application has a worksheet that lists each surface. Most SF-3 lots are capped at 45 percent impervious cover.
